The standard for encoding and displaying Japanese characters is known as the "Japanese Industrial Standards" or JIS.
Unicode is a universal character set that includes all of Japan's writing systems, including Kanji (Chinese characters), Hiragana, Katakana, and Romaji.
Each type of script has its own range in the Unicode table:
- Basic Latin letters A-Z
- Half-width katakana
- Full-width katakana
- Hiragana from U+3040 to U+309F
- CJK Unified Ideographs aka kanji
In terms of encoding formats like UTF8 and UTF16; these allow computers to store text data using binary code while still preserving human-readable languages such as those used in Japan.
